The Basics of WebnoteHappy

What is a webnote again?

A webnote is a bookmark that has notes and tags associated with it. Each webnote is unique by URL in WebnoteHappy.

Writing webnotes from within your web browser

When the web page you're viewing interests you, the easiest way to add a webnote for that page, press the Add/Edit Webnote global hotkey (WebnoteHappy must be running). By default, this is Command-Shift-D. This will pop up a window that contains an area to write a note and enter tags. You can also modify the title of the page and the URL. Type in your note and optionally Tab to add tags. Then press Enter to save your webnote. If you have previously entered a webnote for the current page, it will be shown in the note. Note that you can select text and it will be entered into the notes area by default if you are creating a new webnote.

Another way to add a webnote is to use the bookmarklet, titled "Add webnote". This works similar to the global hotkey, but it sends you to WebnoteHappy, where you can enter in your notes and tags or view the previously entered notes and tags for the current web page.

Tagging

Tagging is a way to add keywords to your webnotes so you can organize them. You can tag webnotes in the global hotkey or in the main interface, in the text fields at the bottom of the window. These text fields do auto-completion, so you don't have to memorize your existing tags to use them again.

You can create a new webnote for any site manually by selecting "File > New Webnote" or pressing the "New Webnote" toolbar button.

Search your webnotes

From any application, you can start searching your webnotes using the global hotkey Command-Shift-Space (WebnoteHappy must be running). From within WebnoteHappy, you can start searching by clicking in the search field in the upper right corner, choosing "File > Search Webnotes" or by pressing the hotkey Command-Option-F.

Then just start typing. It will start showing your search results instantly, just like in iTunes or Mail.app.

The Search Bar will appear and you can narrow down your search to a specific field of your webnotes like Title, URL, Notes, Tags or Import Source.

WebnoteHappy implicitly "ANDs" your multi-word searches, like Google.

When you have a webnote selected, you can open it in Safari. To do so, press the Return key or Enter key. You can also use Command-O or the menu item "File > Open in Browser".

Note that you can open multiple webnotes and it will open them all as tabs if you have tabbing enabled in Safari. If you try to open more than 10 webnotes, it will ask you to confirm.

When you have a webnote selected, you can delete it by pressing the Delete key or choosing the menu item "File > Delete webnote".

Undo and redo

You can undo deletes, creations, and edits as well as redo them. To undo, choose "Edit > Undo" or press Command-Z. To redo, choose "Edit > Redo" or press Command-Shift-Z.
